The simultaneous use of these multiple interfaces for a communication session would improve user experience through higher throughput and improved resilience to network failures.

MPT is a network layer multipath solution, developed by our research group, which provides a tunnel over multiple paths using the GRE-in-UDP specification, thus being different from both MPTCP and Huawei’s GRE Tunnel Bonding Protocol.

MPT can also be used as a router, routing the packets among several networks between the tunnel endpoints, thus establishing a multipath site-to-site connection.

The version of tunnel IP and the version of path IP are independent from each other, therefore MPT can also be used for IPv6 transition purposes.

Current developers:

Dr. Szilágyi, Szabolcs – project officer

Earlier team members:

†Dr. Almási, Béla – earlier project officer
Dr. Kósa, Márk – IT teacher
Kelemen, Tamás – BSc student
Fejes, Ferenc – MSc student
Katona, Róbert – MSc student
Püsök, Levente – BSc student
Harangi, Lajos – BSc student
Kiss, Benjámin – BSc student
Bordán, Imre – MSc student

MPT resources:

MPT-GRE Internet Draft [link]

Downloadable MPT-GRE package [download]

MPT-GRE user manual (English) [download]

MPT papers:

2025.

Szabolcs Szilágyi, Weighted Scheduling in Multipath GRE-in-UDP: Mathematical Modeling and Experimental Analysis, Proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Engineering of Modern Electric Systems (EMES 2025), IEEE, pp. 1-4, DOI: 10.1109/EMES65692.2025.11045626, Oradea, Romania, May 29-30, 2025.
